Losing Money on Internet Marketing Products

burning-money-2

burning-money-2This weekend was bit frustrating for me.  I spent way too much time setting up a new niche site using a new premium WordPress theme that eventually I abandoned and re-built using a free theme.  The most frustrating part was the fact I spent so much time and some decent money for the premium theme AND I wasn’t able to get a refund.

You see, early last week I had someone recommend to me a new premium theme that was designed to allow webmasters to build custom affiliate websites faster.   I’m all for anything that helps me to build my sites faster so I checked it out and it looked like it was pretty cool.  I decided to spring for the license, which was well over $100 and downloaded it.

After getting it installed, I began configuring the super cool affiliate theme and was real excited to get my new niche site up and running in record time.  I had the content I just needed to get the site up.  Needless to say I spent several days, and hours each day fiddling with  the darn thing.  Eventually I really felt like this new theme wasn’t for me.

I’m a fairly technical guy and have no trouble diving into the html, css, or the php within a theme or WordPress itself in order to get the site to layout, function, and appear the way I want it to. I guess that may be MY problem.  With this super fast configuration theme I was bound by the theme itself to place page elements in pre-defined locations, use specific banner sizes, page widths etc. Needless to say it wasn’t saving me any time at all!

I quickly shot an email off to the creator asking very politely for a refund. I figured hey this is IM and everyone offers a refund, or so I thought.  I guess I’m spoiled by the onslaught of offers I see everyday offering an IRONCLAD Guarantee and such.  Because I was a bit shocked to see that the creator was not going to refund my money.

Honestly I can totally understand the authors point of view as there is no way for him to know that I will never use the product again or to “return” the product.  He would just have to trust me.

So here I am again, stuck with a product that I’m never going to use and I’ve wasted another $100+ bucks on hype and hyperbole.

Am I just spoiled with all the current guarantees and refunds?  Should the creator take the loss and give refunds?  Should I just accept it for what it is and deal with it?   We all loose money in this business, many folks hundreds more than my mere $100.

What are your thoughts?  What are your horror stories of lost money on IM products, software, and “SECRETS to overnight success”?  Leave a comment and let me know. Misery loves company and I’d love to hear your story!

How to Handle Ping Backs

images

imagesMany people who have WordPress blogs or websites that are created using WordPress will often get notifications or emails telling them that they have a ping back.  But what is a ping back and how should you handle them?

When WordPress was first created, the developers added a feature called a ping back that notified webmasters when another website or blog linked back to an article on their website. This was great back in the days when reciprocal links were a big deal and really helped your site popularity. But today the searches engines don’t treat reciprocal links with the same weight as they once did.  Now it all about natural One Way Links. Don’t get me wrong reciprocal links aren’t totally bad but you should limit the amount of reciprocal linking you are doing in the promotion of your website.

So what do you you do when you get a ping back?

Like most people who receive a ping back, you’re excited that someone has linked to your article or blog. Your first instinct is to accept the ping back and allow the comment to be posted on your blog.  But, the danger here is that when you accept a ping back, WordPress will  add a comment on the post that was linked to and a reciprocal link is created.

In most cases you DO NOT want to approve a ping back. There are exceptions to this of course, especially when you actually know the person who is linking to you and you WANT to send link juice their way. But, for the most part, accepting a ping back only causes your article or blog to loose link juice.

What are you thoughts about ping backs?  Do you agree? Let me know your opinion.  Its comments like yours that make website come alive.

Promote Your Website with Article Marketing

articles

articlesThere’s a lot of ways to promote your website. Social Marketing, Search Engines, PPC, Directories, Squidoo, and Hubpages.  But the best way to get your site indexed, ranked by the search engines and get great back links can be achieved for free through Article Marketing.

So what is Article Marketing? Article Marketing (also somtimes called Bum Marketing) is simply the act of submitting articles with links back to your site to article directories. These article directories get crawled frequently by search engines and your articles get ranked by the search engines for the popular keywords and keyphrases you targeted in your article.

Where to Start?

First you write a post or article focused around a highly searched keyword or keyphrase. Its easy to do and only takes a few minutes.  At the bottom of your article you include an author resource box that contains links back to your product or web page.  You then submit your article to an Article Directory for inclusion into their database. These article directories usually step you through the submission process by a form on their website. Once submitted the article gets indexed by the search engines and depending on the keyword or phrase will often rank highly in the results pages.

The Bad News

Though article marketing is the best, cheapest and easiest way to get traffic to your site.  The hard part is actually doing the submission itself.  Article directories make it easy with a step by step form, but it can take several minutes to submit your article to just one of the directory.  For each article directory you have to create an account and step the the form submission to get your article posted to their database.  Now take this and multiply it by hundreds.  It gets to be a real time consuming process.

Making things easy

Luckily software programmers have created Article Submitters that make the job of submitting your articles a breeze.  Article submitter software will usually have a built in list of hundreds of the most popular article directories.  You add your article to the submitter software and the software does the rest. But be careful.  Not all Article Directory Submitter software is the same. Not all are automatic and many do have the most popular or highest ranking directories in their directory list.

I’ve put together a review of some of the best article submitter software products available. I’ve created comparisons between each product, listing the price and functions.  Want to know which Article Submitter is the best?  Go to http://www.ArticleSubmitter-Review.com and see.  You’re gonna be surprised at what you find out!!

Disagree which ones is the best?  Then leave your own review.  Don’t see your favorite software? Send me an email and I’ll include it.

Adding nofollow To Your Blogroll Links

link-default

do-not-enterHey Everyone,

Its been a while since I’ve posted anything to my blog and I’m really sorry.  I’ve have been the busy Home Improvement guy lately.  I’ve been busy re-wiring some of the electrical throughout my house, I’ve installed an over the range microwave, installed some ceiling fans, and ran data cable throughout the house.  I’ve been up in the attic way too many times.  But I’m happy now and all those project that have been buggin’ me are finally finished!

But hey I wanted to show you a cool WordPress plug-in that fixes some things with the blog roll of wordpress thats always bugged me a bit.  Have you ever noticed that anytime you add a link to your blog roll that the link is a DOFOLLOW link? I’ve never understood why the WordPress developers havent added a NOFOLLOW option to the relationship attribute for links within the blog roll.   Plus just having the ability to control page rank is a must have for any website.

In the standard wordpress link options, down about half way you will notice a section called “Link Relationship (XFR)” This is where you can set the relationship attribute for any of the links within your Blogroll. But oddly enough “nofollow” isn’t in this list of options.

link-default

WordPress has all types of link relationships that can be set.  Every kind EXCEPT nofollow.  What the heck?!?

Well, Andrew Shell has developed a handy little plug-in that will allow you to add NOFOLLOW to one link, some of the links, or all of the links in your Blog Roll.   Its as simple as installing the plugin like any other plug-in.  After it’s installed, You’ll see a new option under the  Links section of the WordPress dashboard to set the nofollow attribute for each of the links in your Blogroll.

link-nofollow

Now you can manage your link juice, page rank, and not be penalized by Google for “selling links” all with one little free plug-in.  AND.. This is way better than manually adding links to your sidebar and hand coding rel=”nofollow”.

Is this handy or what?  Let me know. Leave a comment here and let me know if you have any favorite plug-ins to wordpress that you like.

No Photoshop? Don’t Worry Get Gimpy

paintbrush

paintbrushThis post is another in a series of posts I’m doing on free stuff! Every one loves free stuff and today I’m going to show you how to get some cool free image editing software.

Everyone who has ever setup a website or done any kind of work on the Internet has, at one time or another, needed a good image editor to either create a cool graphic or edit a cool graphic.  Whether you simply need to resize an image, crop an image or create an eye grabbing header, software tools like Adobe Photoshop are a necessity.  But what if you don’t have the $400 or so needed to buy the software?  Outside of piracy, what do you do?

Well, beleive it or not, there are some really great image editing software packages that are a great replacement to Photoshop and best of all these applications are free!!

The Gimp

The Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program) has been around for a really long time.  As long as I can remember, this open source application has been a great alternative to Windows based image editors.  Originally only available on  Linux and Unix, the Gimp is now available for Windows and Mac as well!  The Gimp supports a range of common file types like JPEG (JFIF), GIF, PNG, PSD, TIFF to special use formats such as the multi-resolution and multi-color-depth Windows icon files.  This tool is very similar to Photshop and most anyone familiar with Photoshop should have no trouble getting going with the Gimp.

Paint.net

Paint.net has been touted as an advanced replacment for Windows Paint program (which is almost useless).  Paint.net is another great free image manipulation software package that will allow you to do most any web graphics work you need for your website.   With supported files types such as PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, TGA, DDS, and TIFF as well as its own PDN format to preserve layering similar to photoshop. Natively however Paint.net does not support PSD files. But never fear Paint.net does support plugins and there is a cool PSD plugin for Paint.net to give the needed PSD support.

There are more free image editors out there, but these are my two favorites.  I actually have all three loaded on my system as each one can do things a little easier than others in certain areas. Overall though if you can’t afford Photoshop there are alternatives out there that will get your website looking bright and shiney with the eye popping graphics we all love!

Automated Link Building

bkggif

bkggifBuilding back links is probably one of the most important things you can do when building a successful blog or website.  I’m always on the look out for new ways to build back links to my sites.  The best way to build back links really in my opinion is the old fashioned way. By emailing the webmaster of a site that you like (that is also similar to the site you would like to promote ) and ask nicely if they would like to trade links.  Now, I can hear the moans and groans about a reciprocal link, blah blah blah.. yeah I know.  A one way link IS the best kind of link you can get,  but when you’re just starting out building a new site, reciprocal links work just fine. And I know for a fact a good recip link with bring in some decent traffic.

The problem with this method is that it takes time and a lot of webmaster’s don’t want to give up their link juice to a new website or to someone they don’t know. Now there are pay services such as Jon Leger’s 1 Way Links or 3 Way Links that I’ve talked about here on my blog.   I like both of these and they do work well.  But they cost money and a new site rarely has any money.  So what if I told you I found a site that will do 3 way links for FREE?!?  Yup for Free.  I’d say Hell Ya !

Daniel McGonagle has a great site/service called Automated Link Building that essentially can be compared to Jon Leger’s 3 Way Links.  It’s a set and forget system where you add a page to your site to host links and in return you get 250 decent back links to your site.   The best news is that Daniel right now is giving it away for FREE!!

Check it out if you can, you don’t have anything to loose and some back links to gain.

I just got an email from Danial today saying that he’s going to start charging for it soon (in the next 30 days)  so if you’re insterested in getting some free back links to your site. you should check it out.

Upgrading to a Reseller Account

forsale

forsaleYesterday was an interesting day.  I decided to upgrade my Hostgator shared hosting account to a reseller account.  Now that the migration and upgrade is complete, I’m REALLY glad I did. Its a little more expensive than the standard Baby Croc ($24.99 versus the $9.99/mo plan), but this really sets me up for growth and gives me a whole lot more control and visibility into whats going on with my sites. Plus I just might be able to have my hosting paid for by doing a bit of reselling!

The upgrade went fairly smooth and I really have to thank the folks at Hostgator. They are extremely good at what they do, fast and very professional.  You see when you go from a shared hosting account to a reseller account they have to basically do a fork lift move of your entire account, files, databases and everything and move it to one of their bigger clustered servers.

The upgrade can happen in one of two ways. They can either create a brand new account on a new server all by it self.  This would essentially augment your existing shared hosting account and you could move sites over at your leisure.  The second option would be to move your entire existing shared hosting account at once over to be an account of its own under your new reseller account.  This was the option I chose.  They move all of you files and databases to the new account.  You verify that everything is working correctly and then swing your dns settings for your sites to point to their new ip address.

The biggest key to a big move like this is to verify your sites are working BEFORE  you change your DNS.  This is so important to avoid any down time.  And verifying your sites are working is very easy to do. All you have to do is edit your host file on your laptop or desktop to point to the new ip address.

Not to get too technical on you, but every computer has what is called a host file. On Windows machines this file is located in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.   Its just a simple text file and can be viewed or edited with notepad.  Here is what one looks like.

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names.
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on indiv
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
#    127.0.0.1       localhost
#    ::1             localhost

In this file every line begins with a “#” sign.  A “#” sign means that this is a comment and tells the system to ignore the line.  At the end of the file there are two lines for locahost.  Right after these is where you can enter your new ip address and domain name for the site you want to test. Hostgator sent this information to me in an email when the migration was complete.

So for example, when I tested my blog I put the following at the very end:

174.132.194.222           www.www.joesinternetmarketing.com

Then I go back to my browser and pull up my site.  Your browser will look to the host file FIRST before it looks to DNS to resolve your domain name, so this new address will be the one that you can see.  This is very cool because you can test the new account all while the rest of the world still goes to the old location (the old ip address)

For the most part the biggest issues I had were with database user permissions and in two case my existing database user name was too long and had to be shorten to be fewer than 16 characters.

Now that my new resellet account is all setup I ready to go.  I can now be a full fledged hosting provider or just use my reseller account to have more flexibility and security with my websites.

Here are just a couple of reason why you would want to have a reseller account.

  • More disk space
  • Bandwidth
  • You can also put each of your sites in their own account
  • You don’t have to deal with addon domains
  • If your account gets hacked they only have access to that one site.
  • Skeleton files to automatically create new accounts with WordPress (or any other software )already installed and configured the way you want it!

Are you considering upgrading to a reseller account?  Do know of some other reasons you would want a reseller account?  Do you have some good reasons NOT to?  Leave a comment and let us know.  Comments bring website to life. We would love to hear from you!

Thanks

Vidoop Makes Passwords a Breeze

vidoop

vidoopA lot of Internet Marketers I know use RoboForm to help them to prefill out forms and remember login information, bank information, etc. But what if your not at your computer? Or you don’t have your keyfob? (Roboform comes in a key fob version)

I briefly mentioned this inyesterday’s post but one answer to this is with myVidoop.com. myVidoop.com uses OpenID to save and remember any username/password combo you choose on just about any sight.

secure-imagesmyVidoop.com is a free and secure single sign-on to the web on any site using OpenID . What this means is that you sign on once with Vidoop’s image sequence identification system from a browser choosen by you to be secure and all other logins are taken care. Your identify is secure and the tools for managing your account are all provided to you for free from Vidoop.

There are also plug-ins for both I.E. and Firefox to enable MyVidoop to be used on ANY website login.

Overall Vidoop is a cool idea and very convenient if you have a lot of passwords and really get sick of trying to remember them all. Check it out and leave of comment, tell me what you think?

Tweet Out Your Blog Posts Automatically

capture

twitterfeed-logoTwitter is really catching on like wildfire. People love it because it’s so simple. You just type in a short little text message and you broadcast to everyone what your up to. There’s no drama of which friend is at the top of your freinds list, no snow ball fights, no one emailing you back, no chat, … none of that. Just a simple one way communication from you to your friends.

Website owners and bloggers are catching on too. They know this is a great way to quickly let everyone know your blog has been updated. And webmasters love promotion. The challenge is to automate it so every time you make a new blog post everyone gets to know about it.

There are several different ways to automate tweeting out your blog feed to twitter. There is TweetLater, Tweetfeed, and TwitterFeed. There’s even Twitter Updater WordPress Plugin to tweet out about your blog post.

Out of all of these, my favorite is TwitterFeed. It has much more control then all of the other. It’s very simple to setup. The hardest part was getting setup with an OpenID (MyVidoop.com is very cool, BTW -but I’ll save that for another post.) You set how you want it to check for new posts, and filters on keywords, you can even prefix your tweets so follks know that this was an automated tweet. However the best thing I like is that its stable. I had been using TweetFeed for a little while, until suddenly I realized that none of my posts were getting tweeted. –sigh– So off I go in search of another way to make my presence in the world known :-)

capture1

Setup is extremely easy:

  1. Add your blog rss feed – For WordPress users is usually your domain followed by /feed
  2. Set the update frequency – you can have TwitterFeed ping your blog every hour or every day.  Keep this one low – mine is set to every 6 hours.
  3. Choose to include Title or Title & Description
  4. Shorten URL’s – this is handy- it really saves on space
  5. Post based on date of GUID
  6. Set any prefix if you want
  7. Filter keywords – you might not want every post getting tweeted. Filter it out here

Thats it!

Check it out and oh by the way… ITS FREE!!!
